What to know when using government digital services
How to verify official websites and protect personal information before using an online government service.
Online forms, applications, certificates, and other public services can save time. However, searches may surface fake pages with similar names or unauthorized intermediaries. A few checks can help you confirm that you are using the legitimate service.
Identify the official website
The first link in search results is not necessarily official. Start from the known official website of the relevant ministry or organization. Sri Lanka’s main government portal is gov.lk Starting from an official portal such as this can help, but still verify the final service domain and the organization behind it.
Before submitting information
- Check that the organization and web address match exactly.
- Ask whether the form really needs every item of information it requests.
- Never share passwords, one-time passcodes (OTPs), or bank PINs.
- If fees apply, check the charges and payment methods listed in the official notice.
When checking an application status
Keep any reference number or confirmation secure. Do not post your application number or personal details in social media comments or unfamiliar messages. Use the organization’s official contact details if you have questions.
If a website seems suspicious
Stop if you notice spelling mistakes, unusual urgency, requests to transfer money to a personal account, or pressure to share an OTP. Open the official site in a new tab and verify independently.
A good habit
After reading an article or social post about a service, verify any official link it provides. Articles on this site are explanatory guides and should not replace current official instructions.
